Its fluted aluminium body takes its form from the ornamental columns of Madrid’s Atocha Station, turning a piece of railway architecture into an object you can hold.

The pen’s form comes directly from Moneo’s own architecture. Its rhythmic, fluted barrel echoes the ornamental columns of Atocha, Madrid’s great railway station, translating their vertical order to the scale of the fingers. It is a characteristically Moneo move: to root a new object in a specific place and memory, the same instinct that runs through his buildings, where history and modern rigour are held together rather than opposed.

Who is Rafael Moneo?

Rafael Moneo is a Spanish architect, born in 1937 in Tudela, and one of the most respected figures in contemporary architecture. He is known for uniting historical memory with rigorous modernity through a deep respect for materials, context and the culture of each place. In 1996 he received the Pritzker Prize, whose jury captured his range in a single line: “Each of his buildings is unique, but at the same time, uniquely recognisable as being from his palette.” That same signature is now legible in a pen.

For all its provenance, the Lebond Moneo Pen is designed to be used, not shelved. At 138 millimetres it has the length to balance comfortably in the hand, and the sandblasted surface gives a sure, non-slip grip through long sessions of writing or sketching. Because it takes the ordinary Bic Cristal refill, the line is familiar and dependable, and a replacement costs almost nothing and can be found anywhere in the world. The ten-year warranty makes the intention plain: this is an everyday instrument built to outlast the fashions around it, the way Moneo’s buildings are made to age slowly and well.
